Boeheim initiated his professional journey with the Eastern Professional Basketball League’s Scranton Miners post his graduation from Syracuse, where he secured two championships and was recognized as a second-team all-star (SU Athletics).

Boeheim opted to embark on a coaching journey in 1969, taking up a role as a graduate assistant at Syracuse University under Roy Danforth. He was soon elevated to full-time assistant coach and was part of the coaching team that led the Orangemen to their inaugural NCAA Tournament appearance in 1975, achieving a place in the Final Four.

Danforth departed in 1976 to become the head basketball coach and athletic director at Tulane University, leading to Boeheim’s promotion to head coach. In 1986, Boeheim was approached for the head coaching role at Ohio State but chose to stay at Syracuse. Throughout his 42 seasons as head coach, Boeheim has guided Syracuse to the postseason consistently, with the team being eliminated from the playoffs only once, in 1993.

Boeheim has been awarded Big East Coach of the Year four times and District II Coach of the Year ten times by the National Association of Basketball Coaches. Additionally, in 2004, Boeheim received two more accolades. The first was in spring, when he was honored with the Clair Bee Award for his contributions to basketball.
