Iliya Damagum’s Childhood and Education

Umar Iliya Damagum was born on August 10, 1963, in Damagum, located in Yobe State’s Fune Local Government Area. He attended the Central Primary School in Damagum and completed his SSCE at the Government College in Maiduguri.

He furthered his studies at the University of Maiduguri, where he received a bachelor’s degree in arts education. Additionally, he possesses a post-graduate diploma in management along with a master’s degree in business administration from the same institution.

Iliya Damagum’s Professional Career

Umar Damagum initiated his career as the Head of Banking Operations at Allied Bank Plc. He was part of the boards of Yobe State Investment and Yobe State Housing Corporation.

He held the position of Director at First Services Nigeria Ltd and served as Managing Director and Chairman of Family Investment Nigeria Ltd from 1995 to 2004. He subsequently joined the Nigerian Shippers Council.

Umar Damagum previously served as Nigeria’s Ambassador to Romania and was the Financial Secretary for the Peoples Democratic Party in Yobe State from 1998 to 2000. In 2013, he also acted as the secretary for the PDP National Reconciliation Committee.

After the removal of Iyorcha Ayu on March 28, 2023, he became the acting national chairman of the PDP.
