In August 2008, the Nigerian Police, via the Police Service Commission, demoted Ribadu to the rank of Deputy Inspector General of Police.

As Ribadu neared graduation from the National Institute of Policy and Strategic Studies (NIPSS) in Kuru, the organizers unexpectedly terminated the event and instructed him to exit the hall, despite him already being seated.
