Kennedy set aside his aspirations to enroll in Yale Law School after attending corporate law courses at Stanford when the United States entered World War II. He sought to enlist in the Army in 1940. However, after months of preparation, he was medically disqualified due to issues with his lower back.
On 24 September 1941, Kennedy joined the US Naval Reserve with assistance from Alan Kirk, then the director of the Office of Naval Intelligence (ONI). He was subsequently assigned to the Office of Naval Intelligence in Washington, D.C.
In January 1942, he was dispatched to the Sixth Naval District Headquarters in Charleston, South Carolina. From 27 July to 27 September, he volunteered at the Motor Torpedo Boat Squadrons Training Center in Melville, Rhode Island.
On 10 October, he earned the rank of junior lieutenant. The loss of a close childhood companion, Marine Corps Second Lieutenant George Houk Mead Jr., who perished in combat on Guadalcanal in August and was posthumously awarded the Navy Cross, weighed heavily on Kennedy in early November.
