His teachers included Henry Cowell, Bohuslav Martinů, and Darius Milhaud. In the 1950s, he wrote music for Steve Lawrence and Vic Damone, later touring with Marlene Dietrich. His long-term partnership with David commenced in the late 1950s, yielding numerous songs especially for vocalist Dionne Warwick, such as “Walk On By,” “I Say a Little Prayer,” and “Do You Know the Way to San Jose?” Together, they established the successful musical Promises, Promises (1968), and their score for the film Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid (1969) garnered an Academy Award, as did the movie’s track “Raindrops Keep Fallin’ on My Head.”
