South African humorist, TV presenter, producer, author, political analyst, and actor, Trevor Noah was born on February 20, 1984, in Johannesburg, South Africa to a black South African mother and a white European father.
Trevor’s father, Robert, has Swiss roots, and his mother, Patricia Nombuyiselo Noah, belongs to Xhosa heritage. Noah’s mother was designated as Black, while his father was identified as White. Noah himself was categorized as Coloured.
During the time of his birth, his parents’ interracial union was prohibited under apartheid regulation, a fact Noah emphasizes in his memoir. Interracial intimate relations and marriages were not decriminalized until a year after Noah’s birth, when the Immorality Act was revised in 1985.
Patricia and her mother, Nomalizo Frances Noah, nurtured Trevor in the black township of Soweto. In 1992, Noah’s mother, Patricia Nombuyiselo, wed Ngisaveni Abel Shingange; they had two sons together, Andrew and Isaac. Shingange physically assaulted both Trevor and his mother, leading to the couple’s legal separation in 1996.
In 2009, after Patricia married Sfiso Khoza, Shingange shot her in the leg and through the back of her head; she survived as the bullet traversed the base of her head, missing the spinal cord, brain, and all major nerves and blood vessels, exiting with slight damage to her nostril. When Noah confronted him over the phone regarding the shooting, Shingange threatened his life, causing Noah to relocate from Johannesburg to Los Angeles.
Noah attended Maryvale College, a private Roman Catholic high school in Johannesburg, where he kicked off his career in 2002 by taking a minor role in an episode of the South African soap opera Isidingo. He subsequently began hosting his own radio program Noah’s Ark on Gauteng’s premier youth radio station, YFM.
