In 1983, he enrolled in the Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA) Kaduna as a participant of the 34 Regular Course. After completing his studies at the NDA, on June 28, 1986, he was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the Signals Corps of the Nigerian Army.
He served as the Commander of the Training and Doctrine Command of the Nigerian Army, TRADOC, in Minna. Prior to his appointment as Chief of Defence Staff, he held the position of Chief of Training and Operations at the Defence headquarters and managed training and operations in the Armed Forces of Nigeria under the leadership of the then Chief of Defence Staff.
Major General Leo Irabor has also acted as a Theatre Commander in Operation Lafia Doyle in the North-Eastern region of Nigeria against Boko Haram, and as the Force Commander of the Multinational Joint Task Force in the Lake Chad Basin Area. He additionally held the role of Chairman of the Assembly of First Nations (AFN) on COVID-19.
On January 26, 2021, he was appointed as the Chief of Defence Staff of Nigeria by President Muhammed Buhari following the resignation of service chiefs.
