“Benue Assembly Unveils Bold Forestry and Mining Commission Bill for Economic and Environmental Revival”

The Benue State House of Assembly has enacted a legislation establishing a Forestry, Mines and Solid Minerals Commission, signifying an important advancement towards economic diversification and environmental conservation.

This initiative is anticipated to enhance regulation in the state’s resource sector while tackling issues related to sustainability and local advantages.

The bill successfully passed its third reading during the plenary presided over by Speaker Rt. Hon. Berger Alfred Emberga. This followed an extensive report from the House Committee on Lands, Survey, Solid Minerals, and Environment.

Legislators assert that the new commission will oversee the exploration and management of forest and mineral resources without interfering with federal agencies.

It is crafted to draw investment through Special Purpose Vehicles (SPVs), while allowing the state to gather land use fees and surface rents.

The legislation also requires environmental protections, including reforestation, and aims to regulate mining and logging operations to enhance security.

Host communities are anticipated to gain from Community Development Agreements, which may provide schools, clinics, and access to clean water.

The Assembly also approved the Benue State Road Maintenance Agency bill, targeting the improvement of deteriorating road infrastructure and safety.
Furthermore, electricity and traffic management bills were sanctioned to oversee energy supply, particularly in underserved regions, and enforce vehicle inspection standards.

With several bills authorized in a single session, focus now shifts to execution. Observers indicate that the efficacy of these laws will rely on transparency, funding, and how effectively they influence daily life in Benue communities.
