The scene is arranged for this season’s UEFA Champions League (UCL) quarter-final matches after supporters witnessed several surprises in the Round of 16 stage in March.
The Champions League last-8 commences this week as various leading European clubs will vie for a place in the semi-final round.
The initial leg fixtures are scheduled for Tuesday and Wednesday, while the return leg matches will occur next week.
There are 8 teams – Arsenal, Bayern Munich, Liverpool, Sporting Lisbon, Paris Saint-Germain, Real Madrid, Atletico Madrid, and Barcelona – that will contend in the last-8.
NAIJATAB reports that only four teams from these eight will advance to the semi-final stage, which will take place towards the end of this month.
Here are the fixtures for the Champions League quarter-final first leg:
Tuesday’s fixtures:
Real Madrid vs Bayern Munich: Both squads are performing well in the competition thus far. Real Madrid enters the match following a 2-1 defeat against Mallorca in LaLiga over the weekend, while Bayern triumphed over Freiburg 3-2 in the Bundesliga. The Los Blancos ousted Manchester City in the Round of 16, whereas the Bundesliga champions eliminated Atalanta from the competition. It remains to be seen which team will emerge victorious at the Santiago Bernabeu on Tuesday night when the first leg encounter concludes, as Alvaro Arbeloa’s side will look to rely on their home fans and avoid consecutive defeats after their loss to Mallorca at Iberostar Stadium.
Sporting CP vs Arsenal: This match will occur at Estádio José Alvalade, Lisbon, by 8 pm Nigerian time. Sporting secured a place in the Champions League quarter-finals by defeating Bodo/Glimt in the Round of 16, while Arsenal eliminated Bayer Leverkusen from the tournament. Naturally, the Portuguese side will aim to leverage their home advantage against the Premier League leaders. Sporting approaches the game after triumphing over Santa Clara 4-2 in the Portuguese domestic league last Friday, while the Gunners were ousted from the FA Cup quarter-finals at the hands of Southampton. Mikel Arteta’s squad will strive to avoid another defeat on Tuesday night, while Sporting will seek to build on their recent success.
Wednesday’s fixtures:
Barcelona vs Atletico Madrid: This is an intriguing match-up as two LaLiga powerhouses will confront each other in Europe’s elite competition at Camp Nou. Interestingly, both teams faced off in LaLiga over the weekend. The Catalan club edged Diego Simeone’s side 2-1 at Riyadh Air Metropolitano in Madrid, thanks to goals from Marcus Rashford and Robert Lewandowski. Clearly, Atletico will seek to avenge their loss against the Blaugrana on Wednesday night, but it won’t be a straightforward task as Hansi Flick’s side will benefit from home advantage. They both reached the Champions League last-8 after overcoming Newcastle United and Tottenham Hotspur, respectively, in the Round of 16.
PSG vs Liverpool: This Champions League encounter will unfold at the Parc des Princes. PSG advanced to the quarter-finals after overwhelming Chelsea 8-2 on aggregate in the Round of 16, while Liverpool eliminated Galatasaray from the tournament after a 4-0 triumph at Anfield in the last-16 second leg match. PSG heads into the game following a 3-1 win over Toulouse in the French Ligue 1 contest held last Friday, whereas Liverpool was knocked out of the FA Cup after a 4-0 loss against Manchester City on Saturday. Nonetheless, the match in Paris is not expected to be straightforward for the Reds as the Parisians will strive to capitalize on their home supporters.
In a conversation with NAIJATAB about the Champions League quarter-final stage, Wakanda FC coach, Orode Richard, shared his thoughts on the matches.
“The competition is finally starting to heat up in the quarter-final stage.
“Reaching this stage is an accomplishment in itself—none of these teams stumbled into the last 16 by coincidence. However, from here onward, the room for error diminishes. It only becomes more challenging,” Richard expressed.
He continued, “That said, I wouldn’t be shocked by a few upsets this week. We witnessed it in the Round of 16, particularly with four Premier League clubs (Chelsea, Manchester City, Tottenham Hotspur, and Newcastle United) being eliminated from the competition.”
When prompted to forecast the first leg of the Champions League last-8, Richard did not hesitate: “Arsenal, Bayern Munich, PSG, and Barcelona will all take first-leg advantages into the return matches next week,” he stated.
