UN chief urges investment in people, prioritising education

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has urged the global community to prioritize education and invest in individuals.

He expressed this sentiment in his statement for the International Day of Education, which will be commemorated on January 24.

“Investment is vital for accomplishing Sustainable Development Goal 4,” and education is “the foundation of societies, economies, and every individual’s potential,” remarked the chief UN representative.

Guterres called on all nations to transform their pledges made at last year’s Transforming Education Summit into tangible measures to establish supportive and inclusive learning environments for all learners.

“Now is also the moment to abolish all discriminatory regulations and practices that obstruct access to education,” he stated.

“I further encourage nations to prioritize education in the preparations for the Sustainable Development Goals Summit in 2023 and the Summit of the Future in 2024.

“Most importantly, I urge civil society and the youth to persist in advocating for increased and enhanced investment in quality education,” the secretary-general emphasized.

This year marks the midpoint since the UN adopted the 2030 Agenda for people, planet, and prosperity, encompassing a set of 17 interconnected objectives that will be reviewed at the Sustainable Development Goals Summit in September on the theme of investing in people. (Xinhua/NAN)
