The Local Authority Inspector (LAI) for the Abeokuta South Local Authority of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Abass Olalekan, has been apprehended following the demise of a female member of the NYSC on Tuesday.
The corps member, Victoria Ariyo, assigned to the local authority, allegedly passed away due to complications from pregnancy.
It was revealed that she had aborted her pregnancy and succumbed to complications arising from the procedure.
According to a source, Olalekan communicated her death verbally and rallied some corps members to arrange her burial, with her remains reportedly interred at Kobape Cemetery on Kobape-Sagamu Road in Abeokuta.
Sources alleged that the LAI was engaged in a romantic relationship with the deceased, which ultimately resulted in pregnancy, and a termination that culminated in her death.
NAIJATAB reports that Ariyo’s passing occurred barely a month after another female corps member, Adeleye Mary, who is a friend of hers, died under what has been termed mysterious circumstances.
Mary, who was serving in the same Abeokuta South Local Authority, was stationed at the Ogun State Television (OGTV) for her Place of Primary Assignment (PPA).
A police source corroborated Olalekan’s apprehension, stating, “He is in our custody at the command’s headquarters, Eleweran, Abeokuta.”
Meanwhile, when approached, the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Oluseyi Babaseyi, declined to comment on questions regarding the arrest of the LAI and the alleged involvement.
Babaseyi did, however, confirm that inquiries into the death of Victoria Ariyo were underway.
“I can confirm that the case regarding the passing of Victoria Ariyo is under scrutiny by the State Criminal Investigation Department,” Babaseyi stated succinctly.
