Thuso Nokwanda Mbedu was born on July 8, 1991, at the Midlands Medical Center in Pietermaritzburg, KwaZulu-Natal. Her multicultural name symbolizes that her father has a mixed Xhosa and Sotho background, while her mother was of Zulu descent.

After losing her parents during her early childhood, she was brought up by her grandmother, who became her legal guardian. Initially, she attended Pelham Primary School before transferring to Pietermaritzburg Girls’ High School for her secondary education.

At the age of 18, she enrolled at the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) to pursue a degree in physical theater and performing arts management. She graduated with honors in 2013, and in 2012, she also participated in a course at the Stella Adler Studio of Acting in New York City.
