Capehart formerly served as a researcher for NBC’s The Today Show prior to joining The Washington Post and MSNBC. Between 1993 and 2000, he was part of the editorial board of the New York Daily News, being the youngest member at the time of his appointment. In 2000, he departed the Daily News to work for Bloomberg News.
During Michael Bloomberg’s 2001 mayoral campaign in New York, Capehart offered advice and crafted speeches for him. He returned to the New York Daily News in 2002 as deputy editor of the editorial section, where he remained until 2004. In December 2004, Capehart joined Hill & Knowlton as a Senior Vice President and Senior Counselor of Public Affairs.
In 2007, he became a reporter and member of The Washington Post’s editorial board, continuing in that role while also serving as a commentator for MSNBC. He hosts the Cape Up podcast, where he interviews politicians concerning race, religion, age, gender, and cultural identity.
In 2018, Capehart started making appearances as a guest host on the WNYC radio show Midday on WNYC (previously The Leonard Lopate Show). On December 13, 2020, he will introduce the inaugural episode of The Sunday Show with Jonathan Capehart on MSNBC.
