Thomas Jacob Black entered the world in Santa Monica, California, on August 28, 1969, to satellite engineers Thomas William Black and Judith Love Cohen. He was raised in Hermosa Beach, California. His mother worked on projects like the Minuteman nuclear missile, Apollo lunar module, and the Hubble Space Telescope, and she was also an author. Through her, he has three older half-siblings: scientist Neil Siegel, Howard Siegel, and Rachel Siegel. His mother, who is Jewish with Polish and Russian heritage, married his father, of German, English, Irish, and Scottish descent, who converted to Judaism. Black was nurtured in the Jewish faith, attended Hebrew school, and had a bar mitzvah.
