Before his foray into Nigerian politics, Akume was employed in the Benue State civil service, ultimately ascending to the role of Permanent Secretary.

Akume ran for governor as a member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) following the country’s return to democracy in 1999.

He was elected as the governor of Benue State in 1999 and completed two consecutive four-year terms.

He was elected to the Nigerian Senate, representing the constituents of Benue as senator for Benue North-West.

In 2003, he successfully sought re-election for a second term while on the PDP platform.

After serving his second term as Governor of Benue State, Akume campaigned for and secured the Senate seat for the Benue North West Senatorial District in the 2007 National Assembly elections.
