In the 1989 NBA draft, he was selected as the 17th overall pick by the Seattle Supersonics. At that time, Shawn was the youngest player in the NBA and quickly began to showcase his skills.
He led his team to 64 wins in the 1995–1996 season by teaming up with Gary Payton and famously dunked over Alton Lister during the 1992 playoffs against the Golden State Warriors. Following the 1996-1997 season, he was traded to the Cleveland Cavaliers where he played for three years.
He faced weight challenges during his time with the Cavs, yet he succeeded in leading the team to the NBA Playoffs where they met the Indiana Pacers. He averaged 26 points and 12 rebounds in the series, although the Pacers swept the Cavs.
In the 1998-1999 NBA season, Shawn arrived at training camp weighing 280 pounds. Despite his weight issues, he averaged a career-high of 20.5 points along with 9.2 rebounds per game.
Before the 2000-2001 NBA season, Kemp was traded to the Portland Trail Blazers, but due to his weight difficulties, he was unable to perform at his best. Additionally, Shawn Kemp won a gold medal while competing with the US national team during the 1994 FIBA World Championship.
