After being commissioned as a second lieutenant through the Army ROTC program, Lee dedicated seven years to the United States Army, primarily serving in the Military Intelligence Corps. In the summer of 2006, he was assigned to support operations in Iraq as part of the 82nd Airborne Division’s paratrooper unit in Tikrit, Iraq. An attorney since 2007, he established his legal practice in Smithtown, NY, in 2008 after serving as an attorney for the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey in 2007.
Prior to his election to New York’s 3rd State Senate District in 2010, he worked full-time for the organization. In that year, Zeldin ran against Democrat Brian X. Foley for the New York State Senate position in the third district. In December 2011, he voted to reduce the MTA payroll tax by $250 million. Additionally, he initiated the PFC Joseph Dwyer PTSD Peer-to-Peer Veterans Assistance Program in the 2012-13 New York State Budget.
He was selected as one of 12 partners in the Patriot Program by the National Republican Congressional Committee. Participants included Republican incumbents at risk of losing their positions during the 2016 general election cycle. Similarly, Lee faced no opposition in the 2018 Republican primary.
