On 27 April 2017, he was assaulted outside his office in the anti-corruption foundation. This attack was executed by unidentified assailants who sprayed brilliant green dye on his face. As a result, he lost 80% of his vision in his right eye.

He has been detained multiple times by Russian authorities and received two suspended sentences for embezzlement in two cases. Both were seen as politically motivated to prevent him from running in future elections.
