“Alia Urges BSIEC Commissioner to Champion Fairness and Integrity in Benue’s Electoral Process”

Benue State Governor, Rev. Fr. Hyacinth Alia, has urged the recently sworn-in member of the Benue State Independent Electoral Commission, BSIEC, Hon Jerry Ashwe, to maintain integrity, equity, and professionalism in the management of elections at the community level.

The swearing-in ceremony was held at the Government House in Makurdi. This event follows the passing of former commissioner, Solomon Akighe, who died last year.

Addressing the gathering, Governor Alia characterized the electoral body as an essential institution within the state’s democratic framework, especially in overseeing and managing local government elections.

He pointed out that the trustworthiness of the commission significantly hinges on the integrity, skills, and impartiality of those appointed to its roles.

“The position you take on today is not solely administrative; it possesses a deep moral and institutional significance.

“You are becoming part of a group whose resolutions will impact public trust in democracy at the community level.”

The governor encouraged the recently installed commissioner to uphold independence in thought and action while performing his responsibilities, stressing the importance of adhering strictly to the utmost standards of openness and fairness.

He also applauded the Benue State House of Assembly for its thoroughness in vetting and confirming the appointee, observing that the legislature plays a crucial role in fortifying democratic institutions.

In his reply, Ashwe expressed gratitude to the governor for the opportunity to serve and committed to honoring the constitution and the laws of the state while striving to guarantee a transparent and credible electoral process.
