The anticipated departure of Bauchi State Governor, Bala Mohammed, from the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, to the All Progressives Congress, APC, has fallen through due to disputes over a suggested power-sharing arrangement.
Chairman of the Turaki-led PDP faction in the state, Sama’ila Burga, revealed this information on Saturday while speaking to reporters in Bauchi.
Burga mentioned that the consultations between the governor, his Turaki-led PDP faction, and the APC leadership reached an impasse after the ruling party allegedly dismissed a 60/40 distribution for the management of party structure in Bauchi State.
In the meantime, the governor and his allies have expressed their willingness to collaborate with other political parties, indicating that preparations were being made to explore new options for potential defection from the ward to the state level.
Burga additionally asserted that the APC had demonstrated its reluctance to accommodate the PDP structure and the state administration.
As per him, the APC began discussions via the governor, involving its national leadership and Kano State Governor, Abba Yusuf, who traveled to Bauchi to encourage Mohammed to switch parties.
He indicated that the negotiations, however, encountered a halt after the APC failed to endorse the 60–40 sharing arrangement, which he pointed out had been utilized in comparable defections in other regions.
“This is how it has been executed in other areas where governors migrated to APC. They turned down this arrangement, and we have concluded that dialogue. You cannot anticipate a government transferring its structure from ward level to the state not to have control over the party.
“We convened this press conference at the request of His Excellency, the Governor, who is overseeing the negotiations,” he stated.
