Before Roker gained fame in America, he previously worked for CBS as a meteorologist. CBS was a WHEN-TV affiliate based in Syracuse, New York, from 1974 to 1976. During this time, he was also a student at SUNY Oswego. After completing his education, he moved to Washington D.C. and secured a weather forecasting position at a private station, WTTG, where he was employed for two years by the Metron media group.
In 1978, he was recruited by WKYC-TV in Cleveland, an NBC outlet. He spent five years there and later advanced to lead WNBC-TV, returning closer to home. Roker arrived back in New York City at the end of 1983 and became a weathercaster. After eight months, he emerged as the station’s primary weathercaster, replacing the seasoned Dr. Frank Field, who left due to contractual disputes.
