Asisat Oshoala is a Nigerian professional soccer player currently representing Barcelona’s women’s squad.

Born in Ikorodu, Lagos State, Nigeria, on October 9, 1994, Oshoala has risen to prominence within the football realm. Recently, she received a nomination for the CAF Best Female Player award.

Education

Asisat began her primary education at Air Force Primary School in Victoria Island. She subsequently moved to Aunty Ayo International School in Ikoyi for her secondary education, graduating in 2009.

Nonetheless, she launched her career at the Nigerian Lower Division club, FC Robo, immediately after finishing high school, where she stayed until 2013 before transferring to Rivers Angels.

Football Career

Asisat initially made a name for herself at Rivers Angels, where she represented Nigeria in the 2014 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup in Canada, achieving a second-place finish. With seven goals, she topped the scoring chart and was awarded Player of the Tournament.

Her remarkable performances in Canada and Namibia caught the attention of former team coach Edwin Okon, who included her in the Super Falcons lineup for the FIFA Women’s World Cup in Canada.

Throughout that World Cup, Asisat showcased her skills for the Nigerian women’s national squad. Unfortunately, the Super Falcons were unable to progress beyond the group stage.

On January 23, 2015, Oshoala signed with the Liverpool Ladies. She made history as the first African female footballer to play in the Women’s Super League upon moving to Liverpool.

In 2015, following an outstanding debut season, Oshoala was honored as the BBC Women’s Footballer of the Year.

The following year, Oshoala departed from Arsenal Ladies to join the Chinese club Dalian Quanjian F.C. During her short tenure in China, she emerged as the league’s top scorer in the 2017 Superleague.

In 2019, FC Barcelona Femení secured a loan agreement with Asisat in Spain, following an exceptional stint in China, which lasted until season’s end.

In 2019, Barcelona faced off against Lyon, losing 4-1, and she netted the team’s solitary goal. This achievement made her the first African and the first Barcelona Femení player to score in a UEFA Women’s Champions League Final. She is also the first Nigerian to score in either a men’s or women’s UEFA Champions League final.

Later that year, the Camp Nou club announced that Oshoala had completed her permanent transfer, committed to the team until 2022.

After Desire Oparanozie’s removal due to a disagreement with influential figures in Nigerian football, she took on the role of captain for the Super Falcons. Recently, Asisat was relieved of her duties as the Nigerian team’s captain.
