Nigerian vocalist and music producer, Michael Collins Ajereh, commonly referred to as Don Jazzy, who co-established the now-discontinued record label Mo’ Hits Records in 2004, is unquestionably the foremost music producer in Africa.
As per the report, Don Jazzy commenced playing the drums at the age of 12 and subsequently, after some time, acquired the skill to play the bass guitar. In 2000, Jazzy traveled to London when his uncle requested him to perform at a local church. While in London, Don Jazzy found work at McDonald’s as a security officer. Despite this, he maintained his passion for music, connecting with Solek, JJC, Kas, The 419 Squad, and D’Banj.
Eventually, he learned the art of production from Emeka Infiniti at O-Town record label. Motivated, Don Jazzy began strategizing to launch his own record label. Thanks to his education in business management, along with experience gained from observing professionals, he teamed up with D’Banj in 2004 to create Mo’Hits Records.
Within two years, Mo’Hits achieved remarkable success.
In 2008, Don Jazzy was acknowledged for his role in the production of The Entertainer by D’Banj. He also contributed to the production of Wande Coal’s Mushin 2 MoHits.
Though Don Jazzy did not claim credit as a vocalist, he lent his voice for various background vocals for the artists he worked with, including D’Banj, Sauce Kid, Dr SID, Ikechukwu, Kween, D’Prince, and Jay-Z.
In 2011, Don Jazzy achieved greater recognition when he was hired by Kanye West as a producer at Very Good Beatz. Here, Don Jazzy collaborated with Jay-Z and Kanye West on the production of Lift Off, featuring Beyoncé on the album.
In March 2012, Don Jazzy and D’Banj parted ways, citing creative differences. Following the closure of the record label, Don Jazzy established his own label named Mavin Records on May 8, 2012.
On May 7, 2012, Jazzy introduced a new record label, Mavin Records. He stated,
“I envision Mavin Records becoming the powerhouse of Music in Africa in the shortest time possible.” The label has signed gifted artists such as Dr SID, D’Prince, Korede Bello, Reekado Banks, Di’ja, Poe, Jonny Drille, and the DNA twins. According to Celebrity Net Worth, the artist has an estimated net worth of $10 million.
