In light of Ifedayo Adetifa’s selection as the latest Director-General of Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) on Monday by President Muhammadu Buhari, Nigerians have shown a desire to learn more about him.

This recent appointment follows Chikwe Ihekweazu’s transition, the former NCDC chief, who was designated as an assistant Director-General at the World Health Organisation (WHO), focusing on health emergency intelligence.

Ifedayo Adetifa’s Biography

His complete name is Ifedayo Morayo Adetifa; while his birth date remains undisclosed online, he is thought to be in his early 50s. Ifedayo Adetifa was raised in Nigeria and earned his initial medical degree from the University of Ilorin, located in Kwara state. He subsequently attended the Lagos University Teaching Hospital for training in Paediatrics and Child Health.

Dr. Ifedayo possesses an MSc and PhD in Epidemiology from the University of Amsterdam, The Netherlands. He became a member of the West Africa College of Physicians in Paediatrics in 2005.

Career

Before his appointment as the new DG of the NCDC on Monday, Dr. Ifedayo Morayo Adetifa served as an Associate Professor of Infectious Diseases Epidemiology at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine.

The new DG received the MRC/DFID African Research Leader Fellowship in 2018. Ifedayo Adetifa has also been part of the Kenyan National Immunisation Coordinating Committee and a member of the World Health Organization, Africa Region’s (WHO-AFRO) Regional Immunisation Technical Advisory Group.

Adetifa also participates in the health sector reform committee led by VP, Yemi Osinbajo.

Research interest

The new DG’s research focus encompasses vaccine impact/effectiveness studies, innovative methodologies/surveillance instruments for monitoring vaccinations, among other areas.
