Austin ‘Tay’ Iornongu Iwar (born June 9, 1997), more commonly referred to as Tay Iwar, is a Nigerian recording artist, singer-songwriter, sound technician, and record producer. He spent his formative years between Lagos and Abuja, starting to make music at age fourteen. After co-founding Bantu Collective in 2013, Tay unveiled his inaugural compilation, ‘Passport’, in April 2014. While it received minimal promotion and initially did not perform well, the album eventually became a sleeper hit, elevating Tay’s commercial profile.
Tay Iwar was born in Victoria Island, Lagos, Nigeria, residing there for 12 years before relocating to F.C.T, Abuja, Nigeria. He is one of three sons born to Nigerian parents. His parents sparked his interest in music from an early age, insisting that all their children participate in classical music education. Their musical preferences, which included jazz, soul, blues, and reggae, along with his brothers’ fascination with hip-hop, greatly influenced Tay’s early development.
At the age of ten, Tay contemplated pursuing a career in law. However, by thirteen, he began playing the guitar and quickly recognized that music was his true calling. At fifteen, he was penning songs and nurturing concepts with a guitar gifted to him by his father. During his ninth grade, a classmate introduced Tay to Fruity Loops production software, leading him to dedicate much of his senior high school years to mastering recording and music production before departing Nigeria to study Audio Engineering.
