Born and raised in New Orleans, Louisiana, on February 7, 1985, Lewis is the second eldest among his seven siblings. The family relocated to Houston, Texas, in 1988. Lewis began training in boxing at the age of 17 and was preparing for fights, but unfortunately, the gyms closed.

Two weeks after completing high school, he faced serious allegations for fighting on the streets. After two years, while on a full football scholarship at Kilgore College, he was sentenced to five years in prison for breaching probation but served three and a half years.

After his release, a friend introduced him to Mixed Martial Arts (MMA). He then worked as a tow truck driver while resuming his boxing training under professional boxer George Foreman. Following his initial win as a professional mixed martial artist, he chose to pursue a career in MMA.
