Ike Ekweremadu: The Peter Obi Controversy

Nigerians criticized former Deputy Senate President Ike Ekweremadu on Twitter for asserting that the South-East region would not back Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi in the 2023 election.

Obi, a former governor of Anambra State, had served as Atiku Abubakar’s running mate for president in the People’s Democratic Party’s general elections of 2019. Atiku is also the PDP’s candidate for president in 2023.

Until several months before the PDP presidential primary election, the former governor was affiliated with the party. He subsequently transitioned to the LP, citing irregularities in his former affiliation.

Many Nigerians, especially younger voters in the South, believe that Obi will challenge both the APC and the PDP in 2023; however, Ekweremadu took a different stance on Wednesday, asserting that the South East would rally behind the PDP due to Delta State Governor Ifeanyi Okowa, who is widely considered to be of Igbo heritage.

Even though Ekweremadu expressed his opinion shortly after Okowa was named Atiku’s running mate, the video resurfaced on social media on Wednesday and went viral.

Although the media outlet that interviewed Ekweremadu is not known, a female voice was audible in the YouTube video.

“I assure you, the South East will cast their votes for the People Democratic Party,” Ekweremadu declared (PDP). “I guarantee it. Peter Obi is undoubtedly our son, but there should be engagement. We need to evaluate if Peter has a realistic chance of securing the presidency. The East cannot afford to squander their votes. When addressing issues that impact our people, our children, and our future, can we really afford to be sentimental? No.”

“We don’t want to act in ways we might regret later. Thus, we feel that Peter is well qualified because we believe the PDP holds the key to our people’s future. Therefore, as leaders, this is a decision we must make. I will elucidate to our people.”

“Okowa, naturally, is one of us, thus there is no distinction between Okowa and Peter in terms of safeguarding the interests of the South. Therefore, we shall go and afford the people of the South East that opportunity.”
