The acclaimed director was born amidst World War II, on January 5, 1941, in Bunkyō, Tokyo. Hayao developed an interest in animation and manga early on. His father, Katsuji Miyazaki, was an Aeronautical Engineer and managed the family business, Miyazaki Airplanes. He passed away in March 1993, at the age of 77-78. Hayao’s mother, Dola Miyazaki, was afflicted with spinal tuberculosis and died in 1983. He has two brothers, Shirou Miyazaki and Yutaka Miyazaki, along with one sister, Arita Miyazaki.
Due to the devastation of World War II, the family evacuated to Utsunomiya when Hayao was three years old. They later relocated to Kanuma following the bombings in Utsunomiya. He began his education at an institution in Utsunomiya. Subsequently, he attended institutions such as Eifuku School and Omiya Junior High. Miyazaki joined TOEI Animation in Japan in 1963 to pursue his aspirations. He garnered acclaim for his script adaptation of ‘Gulliver’s Travels to the Moon’. In 1968, he worked on an animated project titled ‘Prince of the Sun’. The following year, Miyazaki contributed to ‘Puss in Boots’. In 1971, he departed TOEI to join the animation firm ‘A Pro’. There, he collaborated with Isao Takahata and co-directed 23 episodes of ‘Lupin III’.
The duo worked together on numerous projects, including ‘Panda! Go, Panda’ and ‘Heidi, Girl of the Alps’. In 1973, he joined Nippon Animation. He left Nippon in 1979. His manga creations like ‘Princess Mononoke’ and ‘Porco Rosso’ received acclaim in 1990.
