Professor Amupitan commenced his academic journey in 1989, after completing his National Youth Service at the Bauchi State Publishing Corporation. That same year, he became a lecturer in law at the University of Jos.
He advanced through academic positions, from Assistant Lecturer to Senior Lecturer, becoming a Reader in 2003, and ultimately attaining the title of Professor in 2008. His teaching interests encompass various fields of law, including Company Law, Evidence Law, Corporate Governance, and Privatisation Law.

Joash Ojo Amupitan Appointment as INEC Chairman
On October 9, 2025, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu nominated Professor Joash Ojo Amupitan (SAN) as the new Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). The nomination was presented to the National Council of State at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, where it received unanimous endorsement.
As per official announcements, the nomination was founded on his integrity, professionalism, and non-partisan history. He becomes the first nominee for INEC Chair from the North-Central region of Nigeria.
The Kogi State Governor, Ahmed Usman Ododo, also supported his selection, highlighting his strong moral integrity and administrative expertise. Professor Amupitan succeeds Professor Mahmood Yakubu, whose 10-year tenure concluded in October 2025 after passing his senate screening.
The Senate confirmed Professor Joash Ojo Amupitan, SAN, as the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
The confirmation of Amupitan followed the screening exercise at the Hallowed Chamber on Thursday, 16th October 2025, where Senators questioned the nominee from President Bola Tinubu for three hours, to which he responded.
