Liz Truss: Biography, Early Life and Education

Mary Elizabeth Truss, commonly referred to as Liz Truss, was born in Oxford, England, to parents John Kenneth and Priscilla Mary Truss (née Grasby).

Her mother, a Latin teacher’s child from Bolton School, worked as a nurse, an educator, and was an advocate for the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament.

Her father serves as an emeritus professor of pure mathematics at the University of Leeds. Liz Truss describes her parents as being “on the left of Labour.”

When Truss later ran as a Conservative candidate for Parliament, her mother consented to manage her campaign while her father chose not to.

At the age of four, her family moved to Paisley, Renfrewshire, Scotland. They resided there from 1979 to 1985, during which time Truss attended West Primary School.

Subsequently, she went to Roundhay School in Leeds’ Roundhay area, which she later expressed had “let down” its students.

Afterward, she spent a year in Canada. In contrast to her time at Roundhay School, Truss praised the coherent curriculum and the Canadian perspective that being “top of the class” was “very excellent.”

She completed her studies in philosophy, politics, and economics at Merton College in Oxford in 1996.

Liz Truss: Career & Political Journey

Liz Truss was employed at Shell from 1996 to 2000, earning her Chartered Management Accountant (ACMA) designation in 1999.

She began her tenure at Cable & Wireless in 2000, rising to the role of economic director before her departure in 2005.

After losing her first two elections, Truss joined Reform as a full-time deputy director in January 2008. There, she advocated for improved academic standards in schools, a heightened focus on addressing serious and organized crime, and urgent measures to tackle Britain’s dwindling competitiveness.

Among various studies, she co-authored The Value of Mathematics, Fit for Purpose, A New Level, Back To Black: Budget 2009 Paper, and others.

Before Cameron appointed her to the Cabinet as Secretary of State for the Environment, Food, and Rural Affairs during the 2014 cabinet reshuffle, Truss served as the Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Childcare and Education from 2012 to 2014.

During the 2016 referendum, she supported the Britain Stronger in Europe campaign, advocating for the UK’s ongoing membership in the EU, although she later aligned with Brexit.

Truss made history as the first female Lord Chancellor since the position was established 1,000 years ago when she was designated Secretary of State for Justice and Lord Chancellor by May after Cameron’s resignation in July 2016.

Following the 2017 general election, she was appointed as the chief secretary to the Treasury. Truss supported Johnson’s bid to lead the Conservatives when May announced her resignation in 2019.

He bestowed upon Truss the roles of President of the Board of Trade and Secretary of State for International Trade. In September 2019, she added the title of Minister for Women and Equalities to her portfolio.

During the 2021 cabinet reshuffle, she transitioned from the Department of International Trade to become Secretary of State for Foreign, Commonwealth, and Development Affairs.

In December 2021, she was appointed as the government’s chief negotiator with the EU and UK chair of the EU-UK Partnership Council.

Liz Truss is the 56th prime minister of the UK and is the third woman to hold this position. The previous female prime ministers – Margaret Thatcher and Theresa May – were also members of the Conservative Party.
