Eileen Gu: Father
He remains somewhat of a mystery. The Times states that he is American and an alumnus of Harvard, yet there are no public records regarding him, and she does not discuss him publicly.
Per the Times, Eileen’s mother, Yan, relocated from China about 30 years ago and has raised Eileen as a single mother. Yan previously worked as a ski instructor at a resort in Lake Tahoe and often travels with her daughter.
Eileen Gu: Childhood
Gu was born on September 3, 2003, in San Francisco, California, to Yan Gu, a first-generation immigrant from China, and an American father.
Aside from being a graduate of Harvard University, little is known about her father, and Gu has refrained from answering when inquired if she knows anything about him. Her mother had Gu at 40 and is a single parent. Yan, who was a member of the short-track speed skating team and a skiing coach, earned her undergraduate and master’s degrees in chemical engineering from Peking University in the 1980s.
She came to the United States as a student in her twenties, attending Auburn University and Rockefeller University. Gu later moved to the San Francisco Bay Area to pursue an MBA at Stanford University. She enrolled Gu in skiing lessons at Lake Tahoe and, according to Gu, “accidentally produced a professional skier.” Gu was raised in the Sea Cliff neighborhood of San Francisco. She attended Katherine Delmar Burke School, a private K-8 institution, and San Francisco University High School. Gu achieved a nearly perfect SAT score of 1580 out of 1600.
Eileen Gu: Professional Journey
In 2021, Gu became the first female competitor in history to successfully execute a forward double cork 1440.
Olympic athletes Nick Goepper and Alex Beaulieu have trained at the Wy’East Mountain Academy.
Woodward Tahoe is a 33,000-square-foot indoor action sports facility that trains emerging athletes in snowboarding, freeskiing, skateboarding, BMX, freestyle mountain biking, and cheerleading.
Jamie Melton, a former Action Sports Coach at Woodward Tahoe, currently serves as the Head Coach for the Chinese National Slopestyle and Big Air Training Team. Melton has been coaching Gu since she was ten.
Eileen Gu: Global Championships
The FIS Freestyle World Ski Championships are another alternative.
Gu secured two gold medals in Freeski Halfpipe and Freeski Slopestyle and a bronze medal in Freeski Big Air at the FIS Freestyle Ski and Snowboarding World Championships in 2021. She became the first freeskier to achieve two gold medals at the FIS Freeski World Championships. Competing without poles for the first time due to an injured hand that fractured a finger and tore the UCL in her thumb was a challenge.
Eileen Gu: 2022 Winter Olympics
At the 2022 Winter Olympics, Gu emerged victorious in the big air event, the first of its kind in Olympic history, making her the youngest gold medalist in freestyle skiing.
Gu landed a double cork 1620 on her first attempt in competition and was the second woman to execute the maneuver, also being the first to perform a 1620 left rotation. Tess Ledeux successfully landed a double cork 1620 for the first time at the X Games in Aspen, Colorado, on January 21, 2022, and then repeated the move during her initial run of the big air final at the 2022 Winter Olympics.
Gu secured a silver medal in the slopestyle competition.
She achieved her second gold medal in the women’s Freeski halfpipe, becoming the first freestyle skier to win three medals at a Winter Olympics.
World Cup Performance Results
The FIS Freestyle Ski World Cup is yet another option.
Gu clinched her first career crystal globe, becoming the first freestyle skier to dominate a World Cup season in the women’s halfpipe during 2021-2022.
Eileen Gu: Ancestral Roots
Her maternal grandparents and mother raised Gu. Her grandfather served as the chief electrical engineer for China’s Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development. She is bilingual (Mandarin and English) and has a passion for playing the piano. In May 2022, Gu announced her conversion to Buddhism.
Eileen Gu: Relationship Status
According to reports, she is currently single.
Eileen Gu: Educational Background
Gu completed her secondary education early in 2021 and was not selected as a finalist for the United States Presidential Scholars Program from San Francisco University High School, contrary to what her publicist in China claimed. In December 2020, she received early admission to Stanford University, her mother’s alma mater, and was set to commence her studies in the fall of 2022.
Eileen Gu: Honors
Gu became the youngest Olympic champion in freestyle skiing by winning gold medals in big air, halfpipe, and a silver medal in Slopestyle at the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing. She is the first freestyle skier to secure three medals in Winter Olympics history. Amid geopolitical tensions between the US and China, her choice to transition from Team USA to Team China attracted considerable global attention.
Eileen Gu: Wealth
Eileen’s fortune is estimated to range between $1 and $5 million USD.
