EU allocates aid in emergency funding to fight Cholera

The persistent cholera epidemic in Malawi is being addressed with assistance amounting to EUR 540,000 from the European Union.

Thanks to this financial support, humanitarian organizations like UNICEF will combat the outbreak by launching a health initiative aimed at reducing disease transmission and fatalities. This effort in the impacted regions will also incorporate a component for urgent water and sanitation needs.

In Malawi, the initial cholera case was recorded in February 2022. An outbreak was officially announced in March 2022.

The ongoing cholera outbreak has so far resulted in case reports from 29 districts, accumulating the total number of cases reported since the outbreak’s onset to over 8,000.

Two significant weather events earlier this year adversely impacted several areas of the country (TS Ana and RC Gombe). During the rainy season, Malawi is particularly susceptible to severe infrastructural destruction caused by cyclones, flooding, and heavy rainfall, especially concerning critical WASH infrastructure.
