Stock market closes positive as NGX records 1.51% growth



The Nigerian stock market concluded the week positively, with the All-Share Index increasing by 1.51% for the week that ended on December 9th, 2022. This follows the 1.26% rise observed the prior week.

The benchmark index, ASI, improved by 1.51% from the 48,154.65 points it held at the end of the previous week, finishing the week at 48,881.93 index points. The market capitalization also went up, concluding the week at N26.625 trillion.

This results in the Nigerian stock market’s performance for the month so far at 2.56% and its year-to-date increase at 14.43%.

Performance of the Equity Market 

The trading floor of the Exchange recorded 15,317 transactions last week involving a total of 1.225 billion shares valued at N15.243 billion. This exceeds the 16,183 transactions for 839.978 million shares appraised at N12.418 billion that took place the previous week.

Similar to the previous week, the Financial Services Industry spearheaded the activity chart in terms of trading volume, with 514.067 million shares worth N5.104 billion exchanged in 6,489 deals, accounting for 41.97% and 33.48%, respectively, of the overall equity turnover volume and value.

The Conglomerates Industry ranked third, achieving a turnover of 69.017 million shares valued at N86.431 million in 528 deals, while the Construction/Real Estate Industry secured second place with 463.348 million shares worth N1.620 billion across 210 deals.

The leading three stocks by volume, UPDC, FBNH, and TRANSCORP, experienced trading of 765.230 million shares worth N4.282 billion in 847 deals, contributing to 62.47% and 28.09%, respectively, of the total equity turnover volume and value.

In a similar manner, 8 indexes increased in value, while 9 indexes decreased, with the exception of the NGX ASeM Index and NGX Growth Index, which remained unchanged.
