UNHR chief designates Radhouane Nouicer as expert on the situation of human rights

On Friday, UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk appointed Tunisian Radhouane Nouicer as his specialist on the human rights conditions in Sudan, succeeding Adama Dieng, who resigned in October.

Radhouane Nouicer has occupied prominent roles within the UN for over three decades, including positions at the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) and the Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs. He will commence his responsibilities immediately (OCHA). In 2011, he also acted as the secretary of state for foreign affairs in the Tunisian Transitional Government.

In his new role, he brings extensive expertise, particularly in safeguarding civilians in nations impacted by conflict and those recovering from it in Africa and the Middle East, including the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Djibouti, Iraq, Syria, and Yemen. He is fluent in Arabic, French, and English.

The Human Rights Council resolutions A/HRC/S-32/1 regarding the human rights landscape in Sudan are to be enacted, and the High Commissioner urges all Sudanese entities to extend their complete support to the new specialist.

High Commissioner Türk also conveyed his heartfelt appreciation to Adama Dieng for his dedication in engaging with all Sudanese stakeholders and for garnering the respect and trust of everyone throughout his tenure in the role, including senior officials, political party leaders, civil society organizations, and human rights advocates.
