German authorities release details of train knife attack victims

The names of the two individuals who lost their lives in a stabbing incident on a regional train in Germany were revealed by the authorities on Thursday.

Prior to the commencement of a state parliamentary assembly, Sabine Sütterlin-Waack, the interior minister for Schleswig-Holstein, announced that the victims were a 16-year-old female and a 19-year-old male.

There were seven individuals injured during the incident on Wednesday, yet the public prosecutor’s office in the northern German town of Itzehoe stated that there were no indications of any terrorist implications.

The suspected assailant was also injured before being subdued by bystanders. The two victims, who hailed from Schleswig-Holstein, were known to each other, according to the police. At the moment of the attack on Wednesday afternoon, approximately 120 passengers were aboard the train.

As per the police, the alleged assailant is reported to be a 33-year-old Palestinian. He is anticipated to be presented before a magistrate on Thursday. The accused is no longer receiving medical attention but is in police detention.

The assault occurred while the train was en route south from Kiel, in the extreme north of Germany, to Hamburg.

Authorities indicated that the stabbing incident transpired just before 3 pm (1400 GMT), right before the train’s arrival at Brokstedt station, where the suspect was apprehended following an altercation.

Reportedly, the suspect was restrained by train passengers prior to the arrival of law enforcement. He sustained moderate injuries and was transported to a hospital.

Among the seven injured, three sustained serious wounds, according to the police.

The motive for the incident remains uncertain. The alleged perpetrator had previously been held in a Hamburg correctional facility for an assault charge, as indicated by the police headquarters in Itzehoe. (dpa/NAN)
