Why is Tinubu referred to as Asiwaju or Jagaban of Lagos?

Bola Tinubu possesses various chieftaincy titles conferred upon him by individuals who feel he deserves such recognition due to his contributions to their communities. Among all the titles awarded to him, Asiwaju or Jagaban are the most frequently mentioned. “Asiwaju” is a Yoruba designation that embodies the essence of Yoruba moral values, meaning “the one who leads.” This title was given to him in acknowledgment of his efforts toward the betterment of Lagos State during his governorship. Consequently, he is regarded as the Asiwaju of Lagos State.

The title Jagaban seemingly parallels Asiwaju. Tinubu received it on February 26, 2006, from the Emir of Borgu in Niger State, Hrh Alh. (Senator) Haliru Dantoro Kitoro III. During the announcement of the Jagaban of Borgu and Yun Bana Jagaban of Borgu, the emir honored him and his wife, Senator Remi Tinubu.

In a quoted speech, the emir disclosed that the title awarded to the Asiwaju was his method of acknowledging and expressing gratitude to him (the emir) for his legal support during the Emirship dispute with the Nigerian government. Although the title can be interpreted as ‘Boss of Bosses’ in various contexts, the emir indicated that within his realm, it signifies ‘Leader of Warriors.’ It can also denote someone who is influential, powerful, and authoritative within a locality, neighborhood, or sector.

Tinubu’s Family (Wife and Children)

Ahmed Bola Tinubu has been married since 1987, spanning over three decades, to the love of his life, Oluremi Tinubu, the current senator for the Lagos Central senatorial district.

Tinubu has six children, as stated by Answers Africa:

  1. Jide,
  2. Seyi,
  3. Shade,
  4. Zainab,
  5. Habibat,
  6. Olayinka

The first three children are from a prior marriage, while the remaining are from his union with Oluremi. All of the children are adults and prosperous in their respective fields. Moreover, Tinubu is also related to Adewale Tinubu (Nephew), the CEO of Oando.

Bola Tinubu’s Significant Political Achievements

  • Implemented a reform strategy that enhanced the living conditions of judicial officials, including magistrates.
  • Improved facilities at the Lagos State Teaching Hospital (LASUTH).
  • Delivered free healthcare services, such as free ante-natal care for women, complimentary eye treatments, and glasses for the visually impaired, commonly referred to as ‘JIGI BOLA.’
  • Set up the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA).
  • Created 37 Local Council Development Areas.
  • Established five additional general hospitals in Lagos State.
  • Pioneered the Bus Rapid Transit System and LAGBUS.
  • Led the political coalition that resulted in the formation of the APC.

Tinubu’s Significance in the APC

Bola Tinubu is presently the National Leader of the All Progressive Congress (APC) – a party he co-founded with Muhammadu Buhari in 2015. The primary aim of the party was to forge a more potent organization that could dethrone the ruling party, Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), during the 2015 general elections.

Initially, Tinubu aimed to run as Buhari’s vice-presidential candidate but later stepped aside for his associate and former justice commissioner, Yemi Osinbajo. The year 2015 witnessed the fulfillment of Tinubu’s ambition to dismantle the ruling PDP as Buhari led the APC to victory, ending the sixteen-year reign of the PDP and marking a historic moment where an incumbent president was defeated by an opposition candidate.

The APC triumphed over the PDP again in the 2019 general election owing to his campaign efforts. The ‘Jagaban,’ Bola Tinubu, is regarded as one of the most influential political figures in Africa in the 21st century. His firm and determined political approach has enabled him to achieve numerous accomplishments.

One of his most remarkable successes involves the multitude of politicians who flourished under his guidance, including Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, Nigeria’s vice president; Babatunde Raji Fashola, Minister of Power, Works, and Housing, and former governor of Lagos State; Rauf Aregbesola, governor of Osun State, among others.

No wonder he is thought to have exceeded Chief Awolowo’s political legacy. The former invigorated the Yoruba people through his free education initiative. Nevertheless, the latter is considered to have…

attained notable achievement as the initial Yoruba politician, whose party, while in opposition, overcame a ruling party in a presidential election, thus seizing control of the central government.

At 40 years old, Bola Tinubu commenced his political journey in 1992.

Bola Tinubu has consistently been a person endowed with inherent leadership qualities. In his youth, he demonstrated a fervor for politics, engaging in departmental politics during his academic years. In his final year at the university, he even contested and secured his first political position as President of the Accounting Society. Tinubu was involved in fundraising and financial contributions for community development initiatives in Lagos State while employed at Mobil Oil after returning to his homeland. He was even recognized for leading the Primrose Group, a political action body advocating for fundamental shifts in Lagos State’s political landscape.

Bola’s formal political journey initiated in 1992, when he contested and was elected to the Senate of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, representing the Lagos West constituency. Tinubu’s political journey officially commenced at the age of 40, given his birthdate of March 17, 1952. Following the annulment of the June 12, 1993 election, Bola Tinubu along with other Nigerians created the National Democratic Coalition (NADECO). This assembly campaigned for the restoration of democracy and acknowledgment of the June 12 results.

Bola Tinubu entered exile in 1994 and returned in 1998 following the death of Sani Abacha. He contested for the governorship of Lagos State in 1999 and was elected on the Alliance for Democracy platform (AD). On May 29, 1999, he took the oath of office as the second Executive Governor of Lagos State, a day he regarded as “remarkable.” He was re-elected for a second term in April 2003, after completing his first term. Throughout Tinubu’s governorship of Lagos State, he enacted numerous decisions that promoted the economic and infrastructural growth of the state.

He heavily invested in education, restoring many schools to their initial proprietors; initiated the construction of new roads to cater to the demands of the State’s rapidly growing populace; and grappled with the Federal government over Lagos State’s authority to establish new Local Council Development Areas (LCDAs) to address its large population. The federal government withheld funds designated for state local councils due to the dispute. Despite these challenges, he successful created 37 LCDAs.

Tinubu’s term as Governor of Lagos State concluded on May 29, 2007, when Babatunde Fashola of the Action Congress assumed office. After leaving his position as Lagos State governor, Bola Tinubu faced the Code of Conduct Tribunal for allegedly managing 16 unauthorized foreign accounts. Two years later, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) exonerated him, along with Delta State Governors James Ibori and Obong Victor Attah, from all allegations.

Tinubu’s Political Journey and Positions Held:

  • 1992 – Elected Senator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria representing the Lagos West constituency.
  • Founded the National Democratic Coalition (NADECO) in 1993.
  • From 1999 to 2003, served as the second Executive Governor of Lagos State.
  • 2003-2007 – Commenced and completed his second term as Governor of Lagos State.

What is the Actual Name of Bola Tinubu?

Bola Tinubu’s actual name is Yekini Amoda Ogunlere from Iragbiji Osun State. This is indicated on his primary and secondary school certificates, which is why he has declined to submit them to INEC.

This assertion was previously circulated on Nairaland in August 2014 and is now being reshared.

On Twitter, a user @Officialmanny4 also claimed, “Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s actual name according to his primary school certificate is ‘Yekini Amoda Ogunlere’ from Iragbiji Osun State. He adopted the name Tinubu after being sought for drug-related offenses in the 70s in the US. This explains why he did not present his certificates to INEC.”

It is important to note that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) published the personal information of 16 presidential candidates and their running mates for the 2023 presidential election on Friday.

Tinubu did not provide details regarding his primary and secondary education nor did he attach certificates for his tertiary education.
Instead, he included an affidavit in the INEC form where he asserted that his certificates were stolen during his exile in the late General Sani Abacha’s era.

The affidavit states:

I was in self-exile from October 1994 to October 1998. Upon my return, I found that all my possessions, including all documents related to my qualifications and certificates mentioned in paragraph three, were plundered by unknown individuals.
My residence was subjected to numerous searches by various security agencies from the moment the Senate of the Federal Republic of Nigeria was forced to adjourn due to the military takeover on November 17, 1993.
I held the position of chairman of the Senate Committee on Appropriation, Banking, and Finance. I was also a complainant in one of the two lawsuits against the interim national government in 1993.
I went into exile when I realized my life was in peril,” Tinubu asserted in his statement.

Nonetheless, Wikipedia, an online reference source, has not documented any prior change in Tinubu’s name.
Nigerians have been responding to Tinubu’s inability to disclose the names of the schools he attended and provide copies of his certificates.

This allegation is believed to have fueled speculations suggesting that he did not attend school as claimed or is concealing aspects of his identity that could jeopardize his prospects in the upcoming election.

There is insufficient evidence to support the idea that Bola Ahmed Tinubu changed his name in the past for any reasons, and he has consistently maintained that he hails from Lagos State.

What is Bola Tinubu’s Place of Origin?

Many might confuse Lagos as the Asiwaju’s native land due to his prominence in Nigeria’s commercial hub. However, Bola Tinubu is originally from Osun State. He is the offspring of Abibatu Mogaj, a prominent Nigerian business tycoon who served as the yál’jà for the Association of Nigerian Market Women and Men.

What is the Age of Tinubu’s Eldest Son?

From previous relationships, he has three children: Kazeem Olajide Tinubu (12 October 1974 – 31 October 2017), Folashade Tinubu (born 17 June 1976), and Oluwaseyi Tinubu (born 13 October 1985), whose mother is believed to be the former air hostess and prophetess Bunmi Oshonike.

How Many Spouses Does Tinubu Have?

As of May 2022, Bola Tinubu is wed to Oluremi Tinubu, a pastor in RCCG and senator. The couple met through Oluremi’s elder sister. According to Oluremi, she noticed kindness in Tinubu’s gaze, which drew her to him.

Oluremi recounted to TVC News:

“What I perceived in him was in his eyes. I noticed the kindness in his eyes. I would say that was what truly attracted me.”

Tinubu and his spouse Remi were married in 1987. However, there are claims that she is not his initial wife.

Bola Tinubu’s First Wife

Bola Tinubu reportedly wed his first wife, who was also the mother of his first two children. She passed away in 2018 following a cardiac arrest, according to sources. Tinubu’s first wife remains largely unknown since the former Lagos State governor has never publicly acknowledged having an ex-wife.
