José Peseiro devoted the first eight years of his managerial career to the third and fourth levels of Portuguese football, beginning as a player-coach at his final club. In 2002–03, he led the squad to a final 11th place finish.
In 2003–04, Peseiro assisted Carlos Queiroz at Real Madrid.
