In 1967, Jung reconnected with a childhood friend who educated him on the profitable nature of cannabis smuggling. Initially, he enlisted his then-girlfriend to transport drugs in her purse during flights. Eventually, he began obtaining drugs from Puerto Vallarta and Mexico using stolen aircraft. Jung and his partner managed to accumulate around $250,000, equivalent to roughly $1.6 million in 2020, within a month.
In 1974, Jung was arrested for trafficking 300 kg of marijuana in Chicago. At that time, he was living in a Playboy club while seeking connections for marijuana distribution. His contact was apprehended for heroin trafficking and informed authorities about Jung to secure a lighter sentence. Subsequently, Jung was sent to the Federal Correctional Institution in Danbury.
While incarcerated at FCI Danbury, he met fellow inmate Carlos Lehder Rivas, who introduced him to the realm of international drug trafficking and the Medellin Cartel, while instructing him about smuggling. Both were released in 1975 and partnered in cocaine distribution. They procured their cocaine from Pablo Escobar, who owned a ranch in Colombia, while their connection, Richard Berlie, picked it up in California.
Despite being merely a middleman, he amassed millions. Ultimately, they devised a plan to steal planes that would transport cocaine at $10,000 per kilogram. Carlos eventually cut ties with Jung and relocated to Berlin. Nevertheless, Jung persisted in his smuggling activities until his arrest in 1987, though he was released shortly thereafter. He engaged in various “clean jobs” until 1994 when he reconnected with his Mexican marijuana trafficking associate. While in Topeka, Kansas, he was apprehended with 796 kg (1753 pounds) of cocaine and pleaded guilty to three conspiracy charges. He received a 60-year prison sentence and was transferred to FCI, Los Angeles, and Tuna. However, his sentence was commuted to 20 years, leading to his release on 27 November 2014.
Two years after his release, he was arrested again for breaching parole on 6 December 2016. He was freed once more on 3 July 2017 after completing his sentence.
