Lewis was born and grew up in New Orleans, Louisiana, on February 7, 1985, and is the second oldest of his seven siblings. The family moved to Houston, Texas, in 1988. He commenced boxing training at the age of 17 and was preparing for bouts, but unfortunately, the gyms shut down.

Two weeks after finishing high school, he encountered serious charges for street fighting. After two years, while on a full football scholarship at Kilgore College, he was sentenced to five years in prison for violating probation but ended up serving three and a half years.

Following his release, a friend introduced him to Mixed Martial Arts (MMA). He subsequently worked as a tow truck driver while resuming his boxing training under professional boxer George Foreman. After achieving his first win as a professional mixed martial artist, he decided to focus on a career in MMA.
