Shorten’s career began in 1996 at the age of 28 when he sought Labor pre-selection for the Division of Maribyrnong. He faced a loss against Bob Sercombe. Later, he secured pre-selection for the Labor seat of Melton during the 1999 state elections. In the 2005 election, Shorten indicated his intention to pursue the seat for the Division of Maribyrnong and contend against Bob Sercombe. However, Sercombe withdrew his candidacy on February 28, 2006, just days prior to the local members’ vote. He was elected unopposed.
In the 2007 federal election, Shorten was chosen to the House of Representatives as the Labor MP for Maribyrnong.
