Tommy Shaw initially joined The Smoke Ring and then MSFunk, a band based in Chicago, where he spent three years post high school. This experience led to his discovery by Styx during a two-week club performance in Chicago. Likewise, after MSFunk disbanded, he returned to Montgomery to reconnect with childhood friends and joined a local group named “Harvest.” Following Styx’s transition to A&M, guitarist and vocalist John Curulewski unexpectedly departed the band, and Tommy Shaw received an audition invite in Chicago for Styx. This led to his inclusion in “Styx.”
His first album with Styx, “Crystal Ball,” was entirely self-penned and included his tracks “Mademoiselle” and “Shooz.” This was followed by the band’s breakout album, “The Grand Illusion.” Tommy’s songwriting talent was displayed on the band’s eighth project, “Pieces of Eight.” Consequently, his rock-oriented tracks “Renegade” and “Blue Collar Man” were the album’s only chart-topping singles, reaching #16 and #21 on the Billboard Hot 100 Singles chart, respectively. Furthermore, he composed and performed on all three singles derived from the album.
In the 1980s, the band began the decade enjoying a wave of commercial triumph with the top pop ballad “Babe” from their album, Cornerstone.
