Tom was born in California in 1956. His parents separated in 1960, and during his childhood, he went to live with his father, moving to various places across the U.S.
He was once an introvert and very reserved as a child, excelling academically and staying out of significant trouble. He participated in drama during school plays while attending Skyline High School in California.
He subsequently pursued theater studies at Chabot College in Hayward, California. Later, he transferred to California State University. He is also a supporter of the California Golden Bears.
