Her journey as an athlete began after she completed her secondary education. Amusan exhibited remarkable athletic promise from a young age.
She finished her secondary schooling at Our Lady of Apostles Secondary School in Ijebu-Ode before moving to the United States for her undergraduate studies at the University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP).
Amusan was raised in a disciplined environment in Ijebu Ode, Nigeria, influenced by her family and educators. She remembers her childhood as being consumed by “school, sleeping, eating, and studying.” “This cycle has defined my life.”
Her running career kicked off at the age of 15 when she participated in and won an inter-house 100m sprint competition. That day, after outperforming a local runner, Amusan was motivated to pursue the sport seriously. Despite the initial secrecy, she began her formal training.
“Her mother ardently supported her athletic aspirations, while her father preferred she concentrate on academics,” Amusan shares. “He restricted my hours at the stadium, yet I would sneak there under the pretext of being at church, thanks to my mother!”
Her mother’s fibbing paid off when Amusan qualified to represent Nigeria at the African Youth Championships in 2013, earning a silver medal in the 200m event. Later that same year, she made it to the 200m semi-finals at the World Athletics U18 Championships in Donetsk, Ukraine, but was disqualified due to lane violation.

Tobi Amusan showed tremendous athletic potential from an early age. At the 2013 African Youth Championships in Warri, she secured a silver medal. Furthermore, she clinched gold in the 100-meter hurdles at the 2015 African Junior Athletics Championships in Addis Ababa. At the age of eighteen, she won gold in the 100-meter hurdles at the All-Africa Games.
Amusan is the second female track athlete from The University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP) to be honored as C-USA Female Track Athlete of the Year since the university became part of C-USA in 2016.
