The artist is the child of a part-time secretary and a manager of Yellow Pages. She completed her education at Firestone High School in Akron and later traveled to Cleveland for band performances.
The artist became fascinated by hippie counterculture, Eastern spirituality, and vegetarianism. She enrolled at Kent State University Art School. While at college, she became involved with a group named Sat-Sun Mat. In 1973, the songwriter moved to London. She secured a position at an architectural firm but left after eight months. She commenced efforts to create a band in France. In 1975, she returned to Cleveland. Chrissie attempted to assemble a group, but it was unsuccessful. The artist participated in auditions for the band 999, although this also did not lead to success. Malcolm McLaren later took her place in Masters of Backside. The vocalist spent minimal time with the Moors Murderers in 1978.
Hynde recorded a demo tape and submitted it to Real Records. Dave Hill became her manager, also funding her rehearsal space in Covent Garden, London. He encouraged her to form a band. She collaborated with Pete Farndon, James Honeyman-Scott, and Martin Chambers, leading to the establishment of The Pretenders.
In January 1979, the band released their first single, which peaked at no. 33 on the UK chart. They followed up with a successful second single later that year.
