The artist is the child of a part-time secretary and a manager of Yellow Pages. She completed her education at Firestone High School in Akron and later traveled to Cleveland for band performances.

She commenced efforts to create a band in France. In 1975, she returned to Cleveland. Chrissie attempted to assemble a group, but it was unsuccessful. The vocalist spent minimal time with the Moors Murderers in 1978.

Hynde recorded a demo tape and submitted it to Real Records. Dave Hill became her manager, also funding her rehearsal space in Covent Garden, London. He encouraged her to form a band.
