The celebrated director was born during World War II, on January 5, 1941, in Bunkyō, Tokyo. Hayao cultivated an interest in animation and manga from a young age. His father, Katsuji Miyazaki, was an Aeronautical Engineer and operated the family enterprise, Miyazaki Airplanes. He departed this world in March 1993, at the age of 77-78. Hayao’s mother, Dola Miyazaki, suffered from spinal tuberculosis and passed away in 1983. He has two brothers, Shirou Miyazaki and Yutaka Miyazaki, as well as a sister, Arita Miyazaki.
In the wake of World War II destruction, the family relocated to Utsunomiya when Hayao was three years old. They subsequently moved to Kanuma after the bombings in Utsunomiya. He initiated his education at a school in Utsunomiya before attending institutions such as Eifuku School and Omiya Junior High. Miyazaki concluded his studies at Gakushuin University in Tokyo.

In 1968, he worked on an animated endeavor titled ‘Prince of the Sun’. The next year, Miyazaki contributed to ‘Puss in Boots’. In 1971, he left TOEI to join the animation company ‘A Pro’. There, he collaborated with Isao Takahata and co-directed 23 episodes of ‘Lupin III’.
The duo partnered on various projects, including ‘Panda! Go, Panda’ and ‘Heidi, Girl of the Alps’. In 1973, he joined Nippon Animation, departing in 1979.
