Stacey Abrams is an American politician, attorney, and author who was a member of the Georgia House of Representatives from 2006 to 2017, acting as minority leader from 2011 to 2017. She was the Democratic Party’s candidate in the 2018 Georgia gubernatorial election but was defeated by Brian Kemp without conceding the race. She also became the nation's first African-American woman major-party gubernatorial candidate. In February 2019, she was the first African-American female to deliver a response to the State of the Union address.
