CJN Onnoghen absent as 94 Lawyers Arrive CCT Session To Defend him

A team of 94 lawyers which includes 47 Senior Advocates with 47 other lawyers, led by Chief Wole Olanipekun (SAN) has arrived the Code Conduct Tribunal (CCT) in Abuja to defend the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Walter Onnoghen. The CJN is scheduled for arraignment before the tribunal today, although he has not been seen on the tribunal’s premises. The proceedings is scheduled to start by 10:00 a.m. Some Senior Advocates of Nigeria in his defence team who were already seated awaiting the commencement of the proceedings include, Former Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Kanu Agabi, Wole Olanipekun, Chief Chris Uche, Chief Adegboyega Awomolo among others. CJN Onnoghen formally served charges by CCB

The Code of Conduct Bureau (CCB) has now served the Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN) Justice Walter Samuel Nkanu Onnoghen, the criminal charges on false asset declaration in person, in preparation for his arraignment on January 22, 2019, at the Code of Conduct Tribunal (CCT). As earlier reported, a clerk of the Tribunal, after being queried by the Chairman, Danladi Umar, during the hearing on Monday, January 14, 2019, confirmed that the charge against CJN had been received on behalf, by his personal assistant identified as Sunday O. Osai. It was later agreed that another service in person, will be effected as service by proxy is not allowed by law. Letter ordering the freeze of CJN Onnoghen’s accounts, released by CUPP

The Coalition of United Political Parties (CUPP) has disclosed what it claims to be an alleged plot by the Buhari-led All Progressives Congress (APC) govt to “harm” the Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Justice Walter Onnoghen”. Spokesman for the Coalition, Imo Ugochinyere, made the disclosure on Wednesday, January 16, 2019, in a statement containing a letter by the office of the Attorney General of the Federation, ordering the freezing of Onnoghen’s accounts. According to the reports, the accounts listed in the letter are the same accounts contained in a petition against the CJN by a group called the the Anti-Corruption and Research Based Data Initiative (ARDI).
