Richard Madden was born in Elderslie, Renfrewshire, on 18 June 1986 to parents Pat and Richard. His father served as a firefighter, while his mother worked as a primary school teacher. He has two siblings with whom he spent his childhood in the city of Glasgow. As a youth, Madden was quite reserved; consequently, he joined PACE Youth Theatre to combat his timidity.
