Peter Obi completed his secondary education at Christ the King College in Onitsha. He was accepted into the University of Nigeria in 1980 and earned his B.A. (Hons) in philosophy in 1984.

Peter Obi pursued studies at Lagos Business School, where he finished the Chief Executive Program; Harvard Business School, where he completed two prominent courses; as well as the London School of Economics, Columbia Business School, and the International Institute for Management Development, where he acquired certificates in the Senior Executive Program and the Chief Executive Officer Program.

Obi was elected governor on March 17, 2006. After seven months in office, he faced impeachment by the state house of assembly on November 2, 2006, and was succeeded the following day by Virginia Etiaba, his deputy, who became Nigeria’s first female governor. He successfully contested his impeachment and was reinstated by the Court of Appeal in Enugu on February 9, 2007. After the court ruling, Etiaba returned power to him.

On March 24, 2022, Peter Obi announced his intention to run for President of Nigeria under the Peoples Democratic Party, but later withdrew and declared he would contest under the Labour Party instead. As reported by the Peoples Gazette, Peter Obi resigned from the Peoples Democratic Party on May 24th. He reportedly expressed concerns regarding rampant delegate bribery and vote purchasing during the party’s presidential primaries, alleging the existence of a faction within the party working against him.
