Osun: Two customs officers arrested by police following deadly shooting in Osogbo



The Osun State Police Command has apprehended two officers from the Nigeria Customs Service, NCS, over a deadly shooting that took place in the Dada Estate vicinity of Osogbo on Saturday.

The command, in a statement released by the Commissioner of Police, CP Ibrahim Gotan, and shared by the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Abiodun Ojelabi, confirmed the apprehensions on Sunday.

Per the police in the statement, “the suspects were detained shortly after the event, which allegedly occurred while the officers were pursuing vehicles thought to be foreign-used cars.”

Ojelabi, who named the suspects as Kolawole Suuti and Danjuma Samuel, both serving officials of the Nigeria Customs Service, indicated that they were captured by police operatives following reports of gunfire in the vicinity.

“The Osun State Police Command wishes to notify the general populace that two officers of the Nigeria Customs Service have been detained in relation to a shooting incident that transpired today in the Dada Estate area of Osogbo,” the statement indicated.

Authorities noted that the customs officers were allegedly chasing vehicles suspected to be “tokunbo” cars when the shooting took place during the operation.

The police revealed that “the operator of an ash-coloured Toyota Corolla, one of the vehicles purportedly being pursued, suffered a gunshot wound and was later pronounced dead by a medical professional at the Osun State University Teaching Hospital.”

The identity of the deceased had not been verified by the time of the police statement, while the corpse was deposited in the hospital’s morgue awaiting further identification.

Multiple items were retrieved from the location, including “a Beretta pistol with breech number 125024, eleven rounds of 9mm live ammunition, one expanded 9mm shell, and two Toyota Corolla vehicles with registration numbers AAA 400 GQ (Lagos) and GFQ 0982 (Texas).”

Ojelabi stated that CP Ibrahim Gotan has mandated a thorough investigation to ascertain the details surrounding the shooting.

The police also assured the public that anyone found responsible would face the full extent of the law, while urging residents to remain composed and provide reliable information to assist in the ongoing inquiry.
